BACKSTORY
She grew up as nobility on Ryloth. She had a very easy and carefree childhood with pretty much any desire provided for and loving parents.
She had a knack for tinkering at a young age and would always be working on droids or other mechanical things. So even though she was a noble, she wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and would often come in for dinner with grease and dirt all over her face and clothes, much to the chagrin of her mother.
She also loved piloting from a young age. She would read all about every space and land craft and memorize all their features and abilities. She would sneak into her father’s fancy landspeeder beginning at age 12 and take it out for a joyride. When she was 15, her parents let her take flying lessons on planetary aircraft. But not spacecraft though no matter how much she pleaded with them.
She could be kind of stuck up at times, though mainly because she was always around wealth and luxury and never knew anything besides that or why anyone would be poor and destitute. But she also had a good sense of humor and would joke around a lot with her younger sister and friends.
When she was 20, her parents arranged for her to be married to the son of one of the most powerful noble families. Bril’fenn was the son and Bok’fenn his father. She wasn’t really against this as he was handsome enough and she knew it would be a huge boost in status for her family.
But then she met Triss Moonstrike. A human smuggler and thief who was disguised as a noble during a fancy ball at Aayla’s berothed’s estate. Aayla met Triss at the ball and they got talking about starships and other mechanical stuff. Aayla had never met anyone, especially another woman, who knew so much about ships. Triss suggested they could somewhere more private. Aayla led her into the estate. Triss seduced Aayla. Aayla had never been with a woman before and never with anyone as experienced in lovemaking as Triss. Triss said she heard of the famous jewels in the estate and had always wanted to see them. Aayla knew that area was off limits but was so infatuated with Triss, she took her to see them.
Triss kissed Aayla right in front of the jewels then told Aayla to close her eyes and to open them only when she said so. Aayla closed her eyes and waited excitedly for what Triss would do next. After a bit of time past, Aayla finally opened her eyes. And found four security guards pointing guns at her. And the jewels and Triss gone.
She was accused of stealing the jewels. She said she didn’t and told them about Triss. But when they looked at the security footage, Triss was nowhere to be found on it and it showed Aayla stealing the jewels. The family of her betrothed thought she stole the jewels and she and her family came up with the whole arranged marriage just to steal one of the most priceless items on the world from them.
The police came and took a panicked and extremely frightened Aayla into custody. They left her handcuffed in their transport alone momentarily and she used that time to hotwire the transport and take off as they blasted lasers at her.
It’s not easy to drive with your hands shackled, but she managed to get near the spaceport. She found Triss who had just finished loading cargo aboard her ship. Aayla was furious with her and told her she was blamed for the theft. Triss didn’t really care but after Aayla pleaded with her to get her off the planet and hearing the authorities approaching, Triss relented and told her to get on the ship.
Triss lifted off as the police blasted her ship. She broke the atmosphere and jumped to lightspeed before any ships could reach them.
Aayla thought she had already been betrayed by Triss enough but she thought wrong. Triss sold her to a bounty hunter soon after they left as a Twi’lek dancing girl for one of the Hutts on Tattoine.
The bounty hunter was a Trandoshan and real scum. Aayla was frightened beyond belief, about to be sold in to slavery. But then lasers rocked the bounty hunter’s ship. He was under attack! The chain that he tied her to the wall of the ship with broke free and she tumbled to the floor, her hands still shackled together. He was thrown from his seat in the firefight and hit his head hard. She saw him momentarily stunned and after a split second of decision-making, leaped onto him from behind and brought her chain linking her shackles together around his throat. He thrashed about and tried to ram her against the bulkhead to dislodge her. But she hung on and choked him out like Leia did to Jabba. When it was over, she stared at his dead body, in utter shock at what she just did.
She was in so much shock she didn’t even realize the firing has stopped. She heard a ship dock with the bounty hunter’s and an airlock release. She grabbed a pistol off the bounty hunter and scrambled to her feet. She shakily pointed it at the hatch as a man in battle-worn armor strode through. He stared at her, not saying anything. She told him not to come any closer or she’d shoot. He eyed her for a moment. Then knelt beside the bounty hunter to confirm he was dead. He stood back up, inches from Aayla. Her hand was shaking even more as she pointed the blaster at his face. He just stared at her. Then snatched the blaster out of her hands with seemingly inhuman speed.
She closed her eyes. Heard a click. She thought this was the end. But then heard him say through a voice modulator, “If you’re going to shoot someone, it helps to have the safety off.”
She opened her eyes. Saw him indicating a switch on the blaster. He handed the pistol back to her and said, “That’s your first lesson.”
He walked toward the airlock. She stared in disbelief after him and asked, “First lesson in what?”
“Becoming a bounty hunter,” he replied.
“Who are you?” she asked.
He turned to look back at her and said, “Most people call me Boba Fett. I suggest you come with me if you want to live.”
She watched him go through the airlock. Stood there motionless for a moment. Then followed him.
She learned that the bounty hunter she had killed was a nemesis of Boba Fett and had screwed Fett over on several occasions. So Fett felt obligated to help her for taking care of his problem. He gave her a choice. He could take her home or he could train her to become a bounty hunter and survive in the galaxy. She knew she couldn’t go back home. She was a wanted criminal and had disgraced her family. She was a dishonored Twi’lek, pretty much the worst fate in her culture. She also knew she never wanted to be put in the position again where she couldn’t defend and take care of herself. She took Fett up on his offer.
He trained her in everything she would need to survive and be an effective bounty hunter: piloting a starship, light and heavy weapons, subterfuge, tracking, melee fighting, and martial arts. He quickly saw her mechanical prowess and she helped fix Slave I and his weapons. And she even was able to keep her sense of humor and make him laugh sometimes, which she actually took as a challenge since he was usually so stoic. She learned the ropes pretty quickly and became an effective bounty hunter.
It was very different than her life of luxury growing up, but she came to respect the profession and liked that she was good at it. And she developed real feelings for Fett. Eventually, things turned romantic and they became lovers.
After a year of training and being with him, he left. He said the Empire was offering the biggest bounty ever on some Rebels and he had to go take it. She wanted to go with him but he refused. He said it was time for her to make her own way as a bounty hunter. She got upset and said she thought he had feelings for her. He lied and said it was just physical and that he couldn’t keep babysitting her. He really did have feelings for her but was afraid of letting her get too close and also was afraid she might get hurt on the mission and didn’t want to see that happen. She was really pissed off at him and told him to go to hell.
Once again, someone she trusted had hurt her and left her alone. She was determined to make it on her own and show him and the world she didn’t need anyone else. Part of her also wanted to prove to Fett that she could be an awesome bounty hunter and worthy of working alongside him and being his companion in more ways than one. She already had her own Imperial Peace Keeping Certificate (IPKC) from working with him. She set off on her own collecting small bounties at first, proving to people she could do it and slowly building a small name for herself. She always brings her bounties in alive and only kills when her life is threatened as the time she killed the bounty hunter who was taking her to the Hutts still haunts her.
She’s been working as an independent bounty hunter for about a year and a half at the start of the story. She’s definitely not the same person she used to be. She’s more hardened to the ways of the galaxy and knows how to take care of herself. She isn’t so carefree and has a really hard time trusting people. She usually keeps people at arm’s length and keeps any intimate encounters purely physical. She often uses sarcasm and bravado to cover up what she’s really feeling. She still loves tinkering with mechanical stuff and that always de-stresses her and puts her at peace. And that fun-loving, free spirit younger version of her is still in there and comes out sometimes, especially if she feels comfortable around someone. She really needs to find that younger self again and with true friendship or love, she might be able to.
She talks a tough game but is covering up the scared girl that's still inside her.
