 Star Trek fans rejoice! A new Star Trek series is set to debut in 2017 on CBS All Access (CBS's digital platform) with Alex Kurtzman set as Executive Producer. The series will be completely separate from the new movies and will feature all new characters! I've been wanting a new Trek series for a while so I'm super-excited about this news. My fondest memories are watching DS9 and TNG (my two favorite TV shows of all time in that order) so Star Trek returning to TV is fantastic news.
I'm a little split over my feelings about Kurtzman heading it up. On the one hand he's done some amazing work like Alias and Limitless. On the other, there's Transformers and Star Trek: Into Darkness, which I wasn't a super-huge fan of. I hope they keep the feel of the other Star Trek series, tackling important social issues and working in cool science with amazing characters you really care about rather than the most action-focused take of the rebooted movies.
