Super-exciting news if you're a Trek fan like me! We already knew that a new Star Trek series is coming to CBS All Acess (the network's digital platform) next January from Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller, but now we know a veteran Star Trek Writer/Director is coming on board. Nicholas Meyer will be a Writer and Consulting Producer on the new Trek series. And this is awesome news because he's behind the best Star Trek films out there: Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country. Basically, he was involved with every even number Star Trek movie featuring just The Original Series cast and, as all fellow Trek fans know, those are the ones that rock! The Voyage Home is my personal favorite, though that's followed super-closely by Wrath of Khan and First Contact.
I'm super-excited that some of Meyer's caliber is coming on board and have very high hopes for the new series! Can't wait to learn more about where and when it will be set and find out who else will be coming on board both in front of and behind the camera. What do you guys think? Are you excited for a new Star Trek series? What are you favorite Star Trek movies and TV series? Sound off in the comments! And for more info, check out The Hollywood Reporter article! - Jeff

I love Star Trek as well, but I'm really bummed out that they're only giving people the pilot for free. Granted, I understand free enterprise, and having to make money and turn a profit, but it seems like a really crappy way to do so. I don't even have Netflix with Daredevil, Jessica Jones and an upcoming Iron Fist series, so I'm not going to be subscribing to CBS's pay channel to watch the show. Sorry Less Moonvess (CBS's head, HEAD honcho), just not going to happen. I'll just have to cross my fingers and wait to see if they release it seasonally on DVD. As far as my favorite Star Trek movies go, that would be Wrath Of Kahn, Search For Spock, Final Frontier and Undiscovered Country. Not sure if I have a TOS favorite movie or not, but I LOVE the JJ movies to death!! Yes, even Into Darkness. Now, if CBS had THAT CAST for a weekly episodic series, I would seriously consider subscribing just for that. :D Live long and prosper.

Thanks so much for the comments Glenn! Yes it will be interesting to see how many people sign up for All Access. I will say Star Trek is the one of the few franchises that can absolutely get a lot of people to sign-up for just that. I probably will and I don't watch any other CBS show. But I love Star Trek that much! Though I will say it may mean the show will have to be very good very quickly for me to maintain my monthly subscription. With other Star Trek series (and I find with many sci-fi series) they needed time to develop and hit their stride. TNG for example was absolutely terrible the first season. But I stuck with it and it became one of the greatest TV series ever! Don't know if I'll have that patience with new Star Trek series if it's the only show on CBS I'm watching. If it was on Hulu for sure! And hopefully it will release within a year on Blu-Ray/DVD and come to Netflix too! Also I really like Undiscovered Country so great choice there!

When it comes to Star Trek, regardless of the movies or the various shows, there is a certain expectation when it comes to the story. I think the decision where they are bringing in Nicholas Meyer is HUGE news, and makes me hopeful for the show. I just read where someone asked him if the rumor was true that it would take place following the events of Undiscovered Country, but he said it was going to be something brand new. It will definitely be worth watching, I just hope that it proves worth the wait. I hadn't heard about the all access pay thing, and thats a little disappointing.

Totally agree Eros! Seeing him come on board gave me so much more hope for the new series being awesome! I want them to do something brand new so I really hope that is the direction they go with it! Thanks for the awesome rankings of the Star Trek series and movies! I love that you have DS9 so high up on your list! It's my number one followed by TNG! You have great taste :)
