DC's Legends of Tomorrow trailer - arrow/flash spinoff!

5/17/2015

DC and The CW have dropped the trailer for new series Legends of Tomorrow, a spin-off of their hits Arrow and The Flash.  Supporting characters from both those shows as well as new characters make up the roster of this new team: The Atom, Hawkgirl, Firestorm, Captain Cold, Heatwave, and White Canary.  Led by the time-traveling Rip Hunter!  Oh and who's the villain?  Oh yeah, it's Vandal Savage!

So here's what I'm excited about: Hawkgirl, time-travel, an awesome villain in Vandal Savage, and super-super-excited for the return of Sara Lance from Arrow as White Canary!  She was easily one of my favorite characters from Arrow so this is fantastic news, and I kept predicting she would come back to life via The Lazarus Pit.

What I'm not so excited about: Captain Cold being part of the team.  I think he is one of the worst villains ever and is the worst part about The Flash, which otherwise is probably my favorite show on TV right now.  The only good news about him being in Legends is hopefully he'll be in The Flash less often.  And his cohort Heatwave isn't much better.

Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts on it and the team! Oh and did anyone else catch what looked like a shot of The Reverse Flash in the trailer?  Legends of Tomorrow is speculated to hit the air in early 2016! - Jeff

It looks cool, but I'm going to have to see A LOT more of it before I can say that I'm really going to like it or not. Most of the DC characters in this are really just their versions of Marvel Comics characters, or is it the other way around.....I'm really not sure to be honest.

Oh, Arthur Darvill comes across too much as his Rory Williams character in Doctor Who....so it's going to take a few episodes for me to really get used to him as Rip Hunter. Most of what I'm seeing of this character is Arthur Darvill doing the character of Rory Willialms, but with a tougher and not so geeky demeanor.

That's just my thoughts.

I'm not up on Arrow. I've tried to get through Season 1 and I admit that its a little too CW soap for me. I think I would like The Flash more but i haven't seen it yet. For me, its hard to get excited about this show due to it's connection to Arrow and Greg Berlanti. I think that guy got lucky with Arrow and now he's in charge of DC's TV output as if he wasn't partly responsible for Green Lantern. Also, does the Atom get small? Doe you need both Firestorm and Heatwave? I certainly root for it's success but I'm not optimistic.

Hey Ryan! First off, go watch The Flash! It's amazing! It's my favorite show on TV! And I love what Greg Berlanti has done for Arrow and The Flash and so glad he's heading up all the DC properties. I didn't know he was part of the Green Lantern movie but I'm one of the few people who actually liked that movie. At the end of Season 3 of Arrow (this past season), they hint at the Atom using his suit to get small. And obviously it will be happening in Legends. You don't need Firestorm and Heatwave. Keep Firestorm (or the half of him that's in Legends) as Victor Garber is awesome and dump both Heatwvae and Captain Cold. That's not going to happen but I wish it would! Thanks so much for commenting!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this trailer!! This is EVERYTHING the Supergirl trailer ISN'T!! It doesn't try to be something it's not suppose to be. I love all the characters (And as much as I'm looking forward to seeing Hawkgirl on the show, I'm more pumped about getting more face time with Capt. Cold and Heatwave!), and I really dig the premise of the show. I'm also really digging the fact that Brandon Routh is getting a chance to redeem himself as the Atom. I really liked his Superman, I think he just got a raw deal with a bloated story, and sloppy (with the exception of Kevin Spacey) cast. I can't wait for this show to start! I'm so stoked that Vandall Savage is going to be the baddie!! He's one of my faves!! It also makes me wonder how DC can continue to put out awesome quality stuff like THIS, but still can't see the wrong path they're rocket sledding down in their cinematic universe. (Meth head Joker, crackwhore Harley anyone?) Someone at DC and Warner's better wake up, or Marvel will continue to hand them their rear ends over, and over, and over, and over.

Hey Glenn! I'm also happy to see Brandon Routh have success in a superhero show after Superman. I also thought he was a good Superman. He's a great choice for The Atom and has been enjoyable in Arrow this past season. And hell yeah Vandall Savage!! Can't wait to see who they cast for him and what they do with is character.

Okay you have to tell me, why do you and others love Captain Cold? I don't get it! I honestly think he's terrible. He's got a freakin' gun that shoots ice and that's it. The Flash would take him out in a milisecond. Hell, anyone could take him out. And I also don't buy his brilliant criminal mind thing. So I'm curious to hear why others really dig him. So yeah you'll definitely be digging Legends then as you'll be seeing plenty of him.

The cool thing about Capt. Cold is while other villains are just insane nuts with not rhyme or reason, or almost omnipotent God type characters with visions of universal domination, Cold is just trying to make ends meet. And (Although it doesn't always show it on the TV show) he actually has a code of ethics, and demands respect. OK, granted, no powers, and just has a freeze gun, but he garnishes enough respect to command the entire Rogues Gallery. He believes in honor amongst thieves, and if he doesn't get it, he's not above eliminating the reason why. Then there's his costume (again more the comic than the series)! Sure it just might be a blue snowmobile suit, but it's freaking iconic. You should really check out some of the Geoff Johns Flash stuff to get a real feel for what the character is really about. You may dig it, and find him a lot deeper than you think he is. :D Again, this is all just my silly little opinion.

Im jazzed about this. I think Arrow and Flash is some of the best shows on tv and in the genre, that if they can continue it with Legends and not overextend themselves, it will cintniue to generate. I think the key is to stay more focused on their effort and stories and not try to match Marvel to much.

Blown away by the inclusion of Rip Hunter, which opens up so many avenues for them. Less excited by adding Heatwave and Citizen Cold ( Seriously, am I the only one thinking it?) but it could lead to some interesting stories, so reserving my judgement there.

Lastly, I am hoping this expansion will open up an avenue were I can enter the show as Black Adam. Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?

Ok, so this looks way better than I expected, visually. It makes me think of JLU, which is good, because I thought they were reaching. I'm not super impressed by the roster, but I can roll with it and see what happens. I love the idea of using Vandal Savage, although he and R'as can have similar aims at times. I love them giving Sarah something to do because the actress grew on me, but I severely dislike her being "White Canary. But, I only dislike this because I know who White Canary is from the comics, If they find a way to do the Brothers in Silk though, I'll forgive the slight. lol Hawkgirl was an interesting choice, are they trying to capitalize on Shayera's popularity in JLU, is she even Shayera? hmmm... I'll give it a shot, looks like they got a budget.

The White Canary thing really bugs me. lol 1st world problems.

See this is what I was trying to allude to in the other post. The built a really strong foundation with Arrow and Flash so why didn't they just build out from there with Titans and Supergirl. how do they expect us to watch grown up Dick Grayson on one channel and pre-teen Bruce Wayne on another while Wally West hasn't been born and Arsenal is in his mid 20s. They say they did it for creative freedom but consistency seems more important. I think someone is like, Marvel won't let you pick your poison, you kind of need to watch everything except shield, we want you to watch whatever you want. Which I get, but only to a point.

Yes! I dig Caity Lotz so much as Sara! I was really impressed with her acting in Arrow and she's got mad fighting/gymnastic skills in real life :) So I actually am not familiar with White Canary in the comics. Who is she? And who are the Brothers in Silk?

I totally get your point that it may be a bit weird to see a ten-year-old Bruce Wayen on Gotham and a eighteen-year-old Dick Grayson on Titans. But I actually think it can make for better shows to allow each one to focus on how to tell the best story for each indivisual series. Something that I've been feeling for a while now is that's a problem with the Marvel movies. They're so focused on tying every single one into each other that none of them are truyly great or make me really care about the characters like Arrow and The Flash do. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this as Marvel can do no wrong in many people's eyes but I actually think, while they're model is financially very successful, overall it's bad for filmmaking and for the longterm success of superhero movies. I've been wanting to do a bigger post on this and maybe I'll get around to it. I've liked almost all of the Marvel movies and they've done a good job. But in the past year or so, every one I see, I like them but I very quickly forget them and they don't stick with me as great movies. And they don't have to be. But they should aspire to be. That's what Christopher Nolan did. The Dark Knight is a great movie! X-Men: Days of Future Past (which I consider separate as it's Fox and not Disney-Marvel doing it) is a great movie about real issues and themes. That's not what I get from the Marvel movies and I wish I did.

I feel like this is a better trailer than it will be show. It's just got that vibe of "they took all the best stuff from an entire season and montaged it", but when it actually plays out, it will lack the heart that makes it compelling. I hope I'm wrong.

That's the reason that I said that I'm going to have to see a whole lot more of this show before I can base my actual liking of it. I can't just say that I'm going to like it just from a trailer, especially when it seems like they have taken the best of what they have to offer & giving it to me in 3 minutes & 53 seconds.

I STILL have problems with the role or Rip Hunter, or rather the casting of Arthur Darvill. It seems like, from the little that I'm seeing, that Arthur is trying to be too much like Rory Williams from Doctor Who......but then again, I have trouble seeing John Borrowman in The Torch because I'm seeing Jack Harkness from Torchwood

Hey Anthony! I'd say wait until you see some full episodes and I bet you'd like him as Rip Hunter. Great actors will make you fully believe in the current role they're doing. That's why John Barrowman is so amazing as Malcolm Merlyn in Arrow. He's an amazing actor! I love his character so much! Thanks so much for commenting on all our SGU posts! You rock!

I have to say, I am pretty jazzed about this. I have to say I am floored that they are using Rip Hunter in it, which will really bring some cool avenues to the show in regards to time elements. I think I echo Jeff's sentiment about the inclusion of Heatwave and Citizen Cold (seriously, am I the only one thinking this?) Exciting to see Sara, Captain Atom and Firestorm back, and Hawkgirl looks insanely cool. I think as long as they stay focused on their stories and try not to match strides with Marvel, It will be epic. Flash and Arrow I think is some of the best shows today and in the genre, and it would be great to see it to have longevity to rival something like Star Trek.

if the success continues, then that opens up the possibility of me joining the cast as Black Adam. ANybody? Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?

Hey Eros!

Yes you can absolutely play Black Adam! I'm actually the casting director now for all the DC shows on CW so I can make that happen :) And haha, not sure if you meant to write Citizen Cold instead of Captain Cold but I love that you did! I think that's what he should be called as he definitely doesn't deserve the Captain title. I actually have some other names I could come up with for him :)

Totally agree about The Flash and Arrow! They're my two favorite shows on TV! And yes also absolutely agree they need to keep focusing on developing great stories and characters like they've been doing. If they do that, they'll be in great shape and I'll be thrilled to keep watching! Thanks for your comments man!

Hey Glenn! Your comments are never silly! I love hearing what you have to say and am always impressed by your super-geeky knowledge! Yeah I should probably check out what Captain Cold is like in the comics. One issues I had in the TV series (while I absolutely love it) is that the first time they introduced Cold he talked about having a code of ethics and I feel he completely violated it in the same episode. I feel there's just not consistency with him and also that he would never be a real threat to The Flash (except the fact that he now knows Barry's identity). What did you think of The Flash season finale? A lot of epic stuff in that episode!

When I say my silly little opinion, I mean that opinion is all subject. No one is right or wrong. Some may love the topic, some may hate it, some may be vastly indifferent to it. :D
As far as the Flash Season Finale, it was bittersweet! The show itself was AMAZING!!! But, it's sad we have to wait till next season for new episodes.
But it was pretty much the topper of an incredible season. Loved all the Easter Eggs while Wally was running through the Speed Force, and Jay Garrick's helmet flying out just as Reverse Flash gets ready to take off. :D I love Gotham, and I really like Arrow, but Flash has to be my favorite super hero type show on TV today!! Good work CW!!
